“Half of all American adults have more credit card debt than savings. Production Company(s)/ Studio(s): Aggregate Films, Media Rights Capitalġst Episode: “ Sugarwood” ( July 21, 2017) - ****
Series Regulars: Jason Bateman as Martin “Mary” Byrde, Laura Linney as Wendy Byrde, Sofia Hublitz as Charlotte Byrde, Skylar Gaertner as Jonah Byrde, Julia Garner as Ruth Langmore, Jordan Spiro as Rachel Garrison, Jason Butler Harner as Roy Petty, Esai Morales as Del, Peter Mullan as Jacob Snell, Lisa Emery as Darlene Snell Team: Jason Bateman (director, executive producer), Bill Dubuque (creator, ep), Ryan Farley (writer), Paul Kolsby (writer), Chris Mundy (ep, writer), Daniel Sackheim (director), Mark Williams (ep, writer)
Even though the show’s diversity is low and the voiceover intros get a little contrived, Ozark engineers juicy family + workplace drama from scenes where Marty is literally laundering money, Del negotiates the price of a minivan, and Laura Linney winding up a possum to throw onto a trailer roof. Unlike recently cancelled Gypsy, this Netflix show nails the fading 1%er ennui with more compelling characters + dangerous drama. Though Marty may not be Walter White, Ozark definitely has the potential to break bad by being pretty damn great. With the local criminal elements, the carDel, and the FBI all looming around the Byrde family, sometimes there are simply too many villains, all of whom seem to present threats at different times. Best of all is Jason Butler Harner’s on-the-edge FBI agent Roy, who uses sex to blur out his own trauma as he investigates Marty.Ĭharacters tend to confront each other easily, not letting the tension build organically from withholding information.
Esai Morales also taunts + haunts as ruthless crime lord Del, while Lisa Emery + Peter Mullan’s crime lords Darlene + Jacob were only introduced at the end of the fourth episode, but are already fascinating. Sofia Hublitz’s rebellious daughter Charlotte + Skylar Gaertner’s precocious son Jonah feel undercooked or trite, which is pretty typical for TV teens. Laura Linney, Julia Garner, and Rachel Garrison impress as Marty’s homemaker-turned-realtor Wendy, local-criminal-turned-crime-boss-in-training Ruth (though her relatives sometimes get a little too stereotypical redneck), and powerful-hotel-owner-turned-business-partner Rachel also impress with their damaged but potent performances.

This is a dark, twisted drama revolving around the Byrdes, husband and wife Marty (Jason Bateman) and Wendy (Laura Linney) and their teenage kids, who are for all intents and purposes an ordinary family.
